Emerald Empire Adventures is excited to announce the
1st annual Mushrooms and Mountain Bikes Adventures
at Leonard Lake Reserve for the fall season of 2009

a Winter Weekend Special Adventure

OK, they’re not REALLY that big

$165/person, all inclusive; food, lodging, guides and transportation from Redwood Valley included.

Saturday and Sunday throughout the season (October -??? depending on the rains)

The creek crossing very rarely rains out and becomes impassible so, as evey mushroom picker knows, the forest can be wet and the trails muddy, be prepared!

We depart Base Camp at 9001 C North State Street in Redwood Valey and after a 1o mile climb up to Leaonard Lake (for those who wish), we’ll take an hour to settle you into your guest housee, whichever of the five classic craftsman style, fully equipped units best fits the groWe’ll have a light lunch and dinner will be started after we go out on our first picking expedition into the old growth redwood on pastures of plenty (Mushroom Gods willing), where no one has picked in man a year, if ever.

After a long afternoon tramping the hills and picking, we will return to the lake houses with your bounty where our chef will incorporate it into dinner and pair it all with some carefully chosen local vintages for your dining pleasure. It will all be ready after you’ve changed out of those soggy togs, and we can swap stories around the fire after the meal, till the sandman calls you away.

You’ll wake up Sunday morning to the smell of coffee and a hearty country style breakfast to warm you up for the Leanard Lake mountain bike loop, 3.5 miles of up and down (see map and profile below), ’round the lake through more untouched picking grounds than you can shake a mushroom brush at. There will be a vehicle for those who’d rather not ride, those 3 and half miles could easily take 6 hours to pick through and the truck makes it easy to pick for your freezer of dehydrator and not have to lug the whole booty bag back to the cabin! A picnic lunch will be served along the way and warming beverages will be provided.

At the end of the day, we’ll load up you and your gear in our bus and bring you back to you car, booty and all. The true hard-core cyclists can ride back down that 10 mile hill they climbed on Saturday, and accommodations will be made for those who don’t want to ride at all.

Email treasures@emeraldempireadventures.com, comment below or call us at 707-462-5795 or book on-line to reserve your spot now. We can accommodate groups of from five to forty and there’s a ten percent discount for groups of ten or more.

merald Empire Adventures will get you there, keep you from getting lost, show you where to pick and what not to pick. We will cook dinner, breakfast and lunch and show you how to pick, cook, eat, and store the mushrooms. You will bring your sense of adventure and clothing suitable for a temperate rain forest in the fall, i.e.; waterproof boots, rain pants and waterproof jacket, at least 3 changes of inner layers. This is wet work, but ask any mushroom picker, well worth it. We do have some of these items and can provide backups or spares for a limited number of people, but best to bring your own. For those who’ve never picked and don’t have their own equipment, fear not. All you need is a collecting “basket” a small knife and a 2″ nylon paing brussh. Tape the paintbrush handle to the knife handle, et voila, you are a mushroom picker. Why the brush? Because the more moss, bracken and soil you leave in the forest, the less you get in your sink. The knife is  for cutting the stalks, much better and cleaner than pulling or tearing.

Yours truly, your guide, has been picking, eating and not dying from wild mushrooms since the age of four. I’ll befuddle you with learned discourse and arcane mushroom lore, and, if you pay attention, not a single poisonous or even bad-tasting sample will go in your basket, and NONE will pass muster at cleaning time. I use the word “basket ” loosely, but in general I’m referring any more or less ridgig-sided container with a capacity of at least one gallon and some ventilation (like holes) for collecting specimens (AKA booty). Mushrooms are relatively fragile beings and do not like the way a bag tends to squash and macerate them while being carried about through the brush. And when the proper stars align, its not unusual to bring out 20-50 pounds of chanterelles per person. They are very easily preserved by dehydration, freezing, canning or pickling and are a wonderful flavoring agent for stew, gravy, casseroles, rice etc. etc. Your mushroom questions will be answered, and I’ve got the book for reference.

This is a great opportunity to bring out the kids for an educational and interesting adventure in an old growth redwood forest, one of the very few remaining intact ecosystems abutting Redwood Valley, and just ten miles off Hwy 101.

Email treasures@emeraldempireadventures.com, comment below or call us at 707-462-5795 or book on-line to reserve your spot now. We can accommodate groups of from five to forty and there’s a ten percent discount for groups of ten or more. Special menu arrangements are available for those with restricted diets.

About the Festival

In June of 1996, the Kate Wolf Retrospective Concert was held to celebrate the music of Kate Wolf. Her friends, family, and a sold-out crowd had such a wonderful time that they decided to make it an annual event.

The Kate Wolf Memorial Music Festival started as a one day, one time event. Now in its 14th year, the festival has grown to a three day, three night, camping event at beautiful Black Oak Ranch in Laytonville, 3 hours north of San Francisco. This will be the 9th year at Black Oak Ranch for the Festival

The Trinity River is the longest tributary of the Klamath River, approximately 130 miles (209 km) long, in northwestern California in the United States. It drains an area of the Coast Ranges, including the southern Klamath Mountains,

northwest of the Sacramento Valley. Considered especially scenic, along most of its course it flows swiftly through tight canyons and mountain meadows.

About the Trinity River Water Quality Monitoring Program:

Since inception of the Trinity River Restoration Program (TRRP) in 2000, the AFWO continues to evaluate the influence of Lewiston Dam release magnitude and timing on downstream water temperature objectives established as part of the Secretarial Record of Decision. Assessments of the thermal regime are conducted through evaluation of empirical later temperature data collected with continuous recording probes at many locations below Lewiston Dam and modeling. Modeling of water temperature is used by the TRRP to evaluate future alternative flow schedules.

This awesome river is nicknamed the 'Cal Salmon' in boating circles to distinguish it from the easier (and more popular) Salmon River in Idaho. There is boatable whitewater on the Cal Salmon above Nordheimer Creek on the main river as well as on the North and South Forks of the Salmon. There is also a great run below Wooley Creek that runs into the Klamath River and its classic big water Class IV rapid Big Ike. Multiple river access points allow the intrepid rafter to paddle any type of rapid that he or she desires. The most popular run is the one from Nordheimer Creek to Wooley Creek described here.

Emerald Empire Adventures is organizing the first annual Ukiah CITO (Cache In Trash Out) on Saturday June 13th. For more detail on the scope and character of other events like this, take a look at the CITO web site. We are in the initial organizational phase and are actively seeking partners throughout the community to make this an Adventure that lifts the spirit, cleans up some trash and brings the community together in service to one another in these difficult times.

Here's how it works at the basic level;

A section (or sections) of littered ground is selected. We will be working with the North Coast Railroad Authority to obtain permission to designate for clean-up the length of their tracks through Ukiah (current photos coming soon) as Target Area 1 and/or other areas as these become available.

A local 501c(3) corporation is being sought to act as co-sponsor. We are currently focusing on the Boy Scouts as an ideal organization, given their long record of community service and wayfinding.Aas you will see by clicking the link below, this is a subject of discussion among the geocaching community at large.

CITO Earth Day and Scouting - Groundspeak Forums

Learn More

Local merchants make small ($10-$20) donations of credit against the purchase of, in particular, food or other basic necessities. These items are represented by "tokens/coded stickers" attached discreetly to various items of trash lying about in the Target Area, with the locations of those tokens being photographed and geographically indexed using hand-held GPS. Our target is to raise $500 in in-kind donations. The Scouts would be there for community service, to assist and to learn about geocaching and wayfinding by recording the locations of finds and comparing them against the original record. In addition to tokens other prizes can be awarded for strangest item, largest, most weight gathered, etc. These tokens are meant to encourage the participation in the community of those for whom a couple burritos might me the difference between eating that day or not, and also for those who are feeling isolated, uncertain or excluded (and vice versa as well). "We heal ourselves by healing the earth and each other" someone wise once said. On CITO Day (tentatively Saturday, June 13th) folks sign in, get their maps, gloves vests etc, and commence to pick up trash. Found tokens are redeemed at the end of the day for coupons or scrip that can be used to "get the goods". Essentially, what we will be saying is "there is $500 scattered along the tracks, come on out and pick it up". Given the way it is structured it is quite likely that some of those who left the litter in the first place will have a good reason to help us pick it up. Its win, win, win, win; a cleaner City, people with at least one more meal, kids learning about public service and the people coming together to express support and affection for the City and the Railroad. (And hope for their/our own future, at least in the mind of this author) There you have it, in a nutshell. Inevitably details change as the project evolves, so keep checking back here for new developments. And if you support this effort, click "Add to Itinerary" at left. You will be taken through the Check Out process (no $$ involved) where you can provide your contact information and/or make any comments or suggestions you think would contribute to the project. We look forward to your input.
